A Staffordshire Euro-MP has criticised the European Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs Committee for voting in support of the Temporary Agency Work Directive without fully appraising itself of the facts.
Liz Lynne MEP had tabled an amendment calling for the European Commission to undertake a comprehensive impact assessment detailing the likely effects the legislation will have on the different Member States, but this was voted down by a coalition of Socialists, Greens and most members of the European People's Party. Just under half of the EPP were persuaded to oppose the directive.
Commenting on the vote, Liz said: "This isn't a game. We are not voting on the principle that temporary workers should be granted employment rights, but what is the best way for the EU to achieve that in the real world. I am simply not satisfied that this directive would achieve anything in the UK other than put thousands of temporary workers' jobs at risk."
"Poorly researched legislation such as this gives the European Union the bad name it has amongst so many people, particularly in the UK. European Parliamentarians owe it to the people to only vote for proposals on which they are clear on what the effects will be," she added.
