Comprehensive impact assessments must be carried out before the EU can adopt a Directive on the working conditions of temporary workers according to Liz Lynne, the Liberal Democrat MEP who was today calling for the EU to reject the Commission's proposal outright.
Liz Lynne presented a series of amendments to the proposal during a discussion in the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs committee today, including a request for the Commission to withdraw the proposal altogether. Speaking on behalf of the European Liberal Democrat MEPs, Liz said:
“The European Commission must do its homework on this issue. Of course we must protect the rights of temporary workers but so far only a very superficial impact assessment has taken place and we simply do not know enough about the possible consequences of this legislation.
“The Commission is in danger of shooting itself in the foot. Despite its good intentions there is a strong chance that the effect of this directive in the UK might actually be damaging to workers.
“The proposals are fundamentally flawed by a “one size fits all” approach and in this instance we must apply the principle of subsidiarity and leave it to Member States to legislate themselves rather than introducing legislation at European level and expecting the wide discrepancies across member states magically to disappear. The European Commission must learn to look before it leaps.”
