Labour Leader resignation: Liz Lynne comment

August 28, 2002 12:00 AM

Liz Lynne, Liberal Democrat MEP for the West Midlands, has commented on Simon Murphy MEP’s resignation as Leader of the Labour Party in the European Parliament last night.

Commenting on his resignation today, Liz said “I’m sorry he has found it necessary to resign, especially after such a short tenure as Leader.”

Liz continued, “Surely everyone who has worked in the European Parliament must sympathise with the reasons Simon has given for his resignation. The farce of constantly moving between Strasbourg and Brussels – and subsequently finding time to spend in the constituency – is a waste of time, money and energy. It is undermining the ability of MEPs to be able to do their job properly, as Simon has demonstrated today. It is high time for the Council of Ministers to stop playing politics and find a solution once and for all.”
