West Midlands Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne sent her submission to the consultation on air traffic growth to the Department for Transport today.
The main points she makes in her submission are:
· Total and unequivocal opposition to proposals to build an airport between Rugby and Coventry.
· Opposition to a second runway at Birmingham International Airport.
· Support for measures to tackle the current under use of Birmingham International Airport.
· Support for high-speed rail link to connect West Midlands to channel tunnel.
· Support for UK to work with European partners for a tax on aviation fuel.
Liz Lynne said:
“I have always been fundamentally opposed to the plans to build a new airport in the Rugby area, but have held off making a formal submission to the Department for Transport for as long as possible so as to hear as wide a range of opinions from across the region.
“My submission makes it clear that I am opposed to both the plans for Rugby and a second runway at Birmingham International. But I have also proposed ways in which the government could manage growth in a more environmentally conscious way by supporting rail travel and working to achieve international agreement on a tax on aviation fuel.”
