Liz Lynne's new year message.
"The New Year is a time for optimism."
"Whatever our personal problems and whatever gloom hangs over the world, now's a good time to be positive.
"I'm looking forward to the European Year of People with Disabilities. This is something I have spent a couple of years working on, as the Rapporteur for the Year in the European Parliament, and I'm keen to see that as well as highlighting issues and being a lot of fun, we make real progress in furthering the cause of disabled people's rights."
"I'm also hopeful that in 2003 the government will officially rule out the proposals to build an airport between Rugby and Coventry. The myriad campaign groups that have worked so hard to oppose these plans have done a tremendous job, and should be congratulated. I am sure that no rational government would seek to impose these disastrous plans on local people after such an effective campaign.
"Above all though, our optimism and hopes are inevitably focused on the wider world. Let's hope 2003 is a year of peace. On the surface, the signs do not look good, but when you consider how far we have come - from the threat of unilateral US military attacks against Iraq in the summer to a historic UN resolution in November - it is clear that there is every reason to hope that dialogue, not violence, will point the way forward."
