Rubbish from Brighton could be dumped in Stoke under plans by the city's waste management company.
Staffordshire Euro-MP Liz Lynne has hit out at reports that domestic waste from Brighton and East Sussex may be dumped in Stoke under new plans.
According to a report in the Guardian, waste contractor Onyx is considering the drastic move if recycling and other waste disposal plans did not work out.
Commenting, Liz said:
"The Midlands must not become the dumping ground for the South. The fact that driving rubbish 450 miles to dump it in landfill sites could ever be considered a viable alternative to recycling and local waste management is a damning indictment on the government's strategy for managing waste. It has little to say about waste reduction or encouraging producers and manufacturers to take responsibility for waste. Its responses on the reuse and recycling of waste are little better."
"The government is over-reliant on the modest landfill tax rises it has announced for the next few years. Raising landfill tax gradually while not offering alternatives will achieve little except fill the Chancellor's coffers. The EU Landfill Directive will end up becoming a major headache if we fail to meet the targets we agreed to in 1999, as we risk getting fined by the Commission. If drastic action is not taken soon, we will fail in our responsibility to sensibly manage our waste for the sake of future generations."
