Commenting on the announcement today by Jaguar and Land Rover that production of the Freelander Land Rover will be transferred from Solihull to Halewood, Merseyside, Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Liz Lynne said:
"Following the recent announcements of job losses to the region by Wedgwood in Stoke-on-Trent and Alstom in Birmingham, today's Land Rover announcement is a body blow to the region. I have deep concerns as to the impact this will have on the Solihull-Warwickshire-Coventry area's pre-eminence in the automotive sector.
"But it is the workers themselves who will be losing out, notwithstanding voluntary redundancy and relocation which will be impossible for many. It is well known that relations between the workers and management at the Solihull plant have been strained for many months and I am concerned over to what extent this plan has been discussed with the workforce. Is this the result of delicate negotiation and good business sense, or a form of punishment as a result of a breakdown in communications?
"I will be demanding more information from Jaguar and Land Rover about how they reached their decision, and will similarly be writing to the TGWU for their version of events."
