West Midland's residents could soon save money on their electricity bills at the same time as helping to protect the planet, thanks to a new EU law.
Euro-MPs have voted in favour of new common standards intended to ensure electrical products are environmentally friendly. The aim is to make sure that products such as fridges, kettles and hairdryers move towards the highest standards of low energy consumption and are manufactured using the minimum of waste and energy.
West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne welcomed the change and looks forward to tumble dryers, computers and televisions designed with energy efficiency in mind.
The Liberal Democrat MEP said:
"This new law will ensure that manufacturers consider the environmental impact of their products from the design stage. This is not only good for consumers and the environment but also minimises waste and energy used when the electrical products are manufactured.
"We are heading towards the position where all manufacturers have to take into account best practice and meet minimum standards for energy efficiency. The consumers will be in a win-win situation. They will save money on electricity bills while playing a part in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and help to save the planet."
The framework will apply to a vast range of household goods, which are responsible for around 40% of carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas produced when electricity is generated from fossil fuels.
The Energy Savings Trust has estimated that many old fridges and freezers cost as much as £35 extra per year to run compared to an energy efficient model. There are a selection of energy efficient fridges and freezers currently on the market, but many less efficient models are also available.
The new law sets guidelines for energy efficiency and other design requirements and will be followed next year by a series of specific regulations affecting a wide variety of household products drawn up in consultation with manufacturers.
