The news that there may be job losses at Marconi's Coventry plant is another devastating blow for the West Midlands according to Liz Lynne Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for the region.
The news follows the decision by BT not to include them as one of their suppliers for a new contract. Marconi currently generates about 25% of its work from BT under existing contracts, which run out in 2008.
Liz Lynne said:
"This is another devastating blow for the West Midlands following on from Jaguar, Peugeot and Rover. I hope job losses will not be necessary and that they can find contracts with other firms to make up the shortfall. If there are redundancies, the Government must be ready to offer the reskilling and retraining that were provided when other companies have announced major job losses.
"We have not yet seen the same reaction to Marconi's announcement as we saw with Rover. There is a real fear that this government reacts in proportion to the political fall out rather than to the needs of the situation."
Liz who is also Liberal Democrat Employment Spokesperson in the European Parliament added:
"We need to make the British economy more competitive by getting rid of red tape and re-skilling the workforce. Many EU countries are able to compete because they have done that.
"The DTI has presided over the loss of over 1 million jobs in the UK and have done nothing to address the problem. This proves that the Liberal Democrats are right to scrap the DTI and instead invest in high-quality training so that young people have the skills employers want."
