Today is UK Carers Rights Day, a day aimed at increasing awareness of the rights of carers and opening their access to information.
It is estimated that 40-60% of disability benefits go unclaimed, and although there are no precise figures on take up of carers' benefits, it is directly affected by the take up rate of disability benefits.
Liz Lynne, Liberal Democrat MEP and Vice Chair of the All Party Disability Intergroup said:
"Carers must be aware of and make use of what they are entitled to. Many do not even realise that what they do is in fact a carer role, giving them the opportunity to claim benefits and access other practical support such as time off, help with lifting and bathing, and equipment for or adaptations to the home."
"It is also vital that carers do not feel isolated and socially excluded. They want and are owed the same life chances that other people enjoy - good health, financial security, the right to a family life, opportunities to work and pursue their own interests."
ENDS.
Notes to Editors:
For a carer to make a claim for Carers Allowance (CA), the disabled person must be in receipt of the middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Attendance Allowance (AA).
