Liz Lynne, Lib Dem MEP for the West Midlands today urged both the government and members of the public to take decisive action to protect the environment and its eco-systems in support of World Environment Day 2006.
Since its launch by the UN in 1972, World Environment Day, held every June 5th, has been an opportunity for the raising of environmental issues, as well as an important chance for world leaders and governments to make environmental pledges and commitments.
Speaking in support of World Environment Day 2006, Liz Lynne said:
"Its time we all made a real effort in defending our planet. Everyone can do their bit by making simple adjustments to their daily lives. Taking a shower rather than a bath, using public transport more or just simply cutting down on our daily energy usage will all have a positive effect."
"The government could also help this battle by radically increasing the use of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and wave power combined with drastic energy efficiency and reduction strategies. Better-insulated homes, for example, would save lives as well as being of tremendous benefit to saving the environment."
This year's theme for World Environment Day is "Don't Desert Drylands" emphasising the importance of protecting drylands, which cover more than 40% of the planet's surface. This ecosystem is home to one-third of the world's population, many of who are from the world's poorest nations.
