Commenting on the latest round of Doha trade talks, West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne, has said:
"Our leaders are meeting in Geneva today to debate our single biggest chance to achieve the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. Failure to conclude an ambitious development agenda won't just be a missed opportunity. It threatens parity and prosperity for the developing world; jobs and security in Europe; and the future of the multilateral trading system itself."
"Success now hinges on breaking the "iron triangle" -- getting the United States to make deeper cuts to its domestic subsidies, Europe to offer more market access by means of deeper tariff cuts, and for developing countries, led by India and Brazil, to open up their markets for industrial goods."
"The finger-pointing blame game must come to an end. The clock is ticking and Trade Ministers must come to Geneva with a clear idea of the sums they can put on the table and must be prepared to deal. With the Bush administration's negotiating mandate from congress looming and Brazil bracing itself for elections, if we postpone now we risk the purse strings being cut altogether."
