"Blair's Environment Advisers Turned Off By Nuclear Power" MEP

June 30, 2006 12:17 PM

In an embarrassing wake-up call for the Government, the Sustainable Development Commission who advise the government on all things environmental, today warned that nuclear power would not "get us anywhere near tackling the UK's energy and climate change crisis."

Liz Lynne, Liberal Democrat MEP for the West Midlands welcomed the announcement that is seen as a pre-emptive attack on the Government's energy review, released next month, which is expected to back the creation of a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The Commission calls for the government to consider other alternatives to nuclear energy, as well as stating that even if the government doubled nuclear power, over 80% of the UK's energy consumption would be unaccounted for.

Commenting on the Commission's announcement and the upcoming energy review Liz Lynne MEP said:

"I'm delighted with the Commission's decision to back calls for the UK's energy crisis to be solved through efficiency, renewable sources, heat and microgeneration. This is something my Lib Dem colleagues and I have been campaigning on for many years. The more groups that tell the government that nuclear is not the right option for this country the better.

"Hopefully with this announcement today, by their own environmental advisers, the power might suddenly switch on in Labour ministers minds and make them realise that nuclear power is not right for the UK. We need a sensible reaction, not a nuclear one!"

The Commission's statement follows hot on the heels of the Commons Environment Audit Committee's revelation in April that the UK simply could not wait the amount of time that it would take to construct the new nuclear power plants.
