MEP Challenges Local Councils to Meet Domestic Carbon Targets

August 14, 2006 12:50 PM

Lib Dem MEP Liz Lynne has challenged local councils and residents throughout the West Midlands region to keep on working towards meeting key domestic energy consumption targets.

Following the publication of Defra's Home Energy Consumption Report Liz Lynne said:

"Everyone knows about global warming but a lot of people think only big businesses have anything to do with it. In fact, domestic housing is responsible for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions.

"This is important because it means we can do something about it through better insulation and more careful use of electricity and gas and our local councils have a duty to help us do that.

"The EU is making a lot of progress with carbon reduction schemes but everyone needs to play their part - starting with their own homes. The HECA report can give us a idea of where councils are doing well and also where more work needs to be done."

Editor's Notes

The Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA) came into being in 1996 as a result of a Private Members Bill

Under the Home Energy Conservation Act 1995, local authorities should make a 30% improvement in energy efficiency in homes by 2010. In order to be on track to achieve this target, each authority should have achieved an 18% improvement by end of March 2005.
