The European Parliament approved today a joint resolution calling for the EU to get more involved in seeking a political solution to the civil war ravaging Darfur for over three years.
County MEP Liz Lynne said: "We can no longer remain indifferent to what is happening in Darfur.
"Europe has a humanitarian, political and moral obligation to impose peace in this part of the world. There cannot be a military solution to the Darfur crisis. Rather, a space for negotiations is needed in order to find a political agreement where all parties participate.
"We demand that the Sudanese Government ends its armed offensive and accepts immediately the decision of the Security Council to deploy a UN peace-keeping mission."
The Parliament's resolution underlines that the Sudanese peace agreement signed in Abudja last May has not stopped the violence but rather provoked a re-emergence of fighting in this region already devastated by the death and displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Liz Lynne described the millions of refugees living in camps and surrounded by armed militia as "veritable prisoners under an open sky".
Liz added: "The NGO representatives are also victims of the conflict. Twelve of them have been killed in the last two months.
"We are asking for a guaranteed and safe access for humanitarian organisations to all parts of the conflict zone and we appeal to the Commission and Council to increase substantially EU humanitarian aid to the region."
