West Midlands region MEP Liz Lynne has welcomed a new report by the NFU on why farming remains a fundamental part of modern Britain but says she is concerned the message may not be getting through to the UK government.
Marking the launch of the NFU's 'Why Farming Matters' report, Euro-MP Liz said:
"I am very glad the NFU continues to work to highlight the incredibly valuable contribution that farmers make to Britain in the 21st century - especially when so many people simply take their work for granted.
"Not only do they put a wonderful range of produce on our tables but they also play a crucial role in our economy, our rural communities, our cultural heritage and in the maintenance of our countryside.
"And as global warming and climate change threaten, they are going to be playing an even more important role through biofuels, recycling and cleaner farming practices.
"This report is timely however, because through my discussions with farmers I am keenly aware of the amount of pressure they are under as a result of the Government's handling of farm payments and their habit of 'gold-plating' EU law with extra regulation.
"Farmers are feeling neglected and abused and we must do everything we can do ensure they are encouraged to continue their essential work."
