Liz Lynne, Lib Dem MEP, today reluctantly did not vote for the EU Third Driving Licence Directive.
Euro-MP Liz said:
"I believe there were some good things in the directive like the call for an EU-wide driving licence which would cut down on fraud.
"I was very disappointed however, that motorcyclists were still kept within the provision of the directive. This will mean that you have to take another test if you want to go from one size of motorbike to another.
"I know how important it is to have the experience of riding a less powerful bike for two years before you buy a bigger one but is it completely unnecessary to make experienced motorcyclists take new tests when they want to move to the highest level."
Editor's Notes
MEPs today voted upon a report on the directive in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The new directive plans to replace the 110 existing driving licences currently used across the European Union with a single EU-wide driving licence.
It also plans to replace the old UK system of allowing motorcyclists to graduate to more powerful motorcycles after they have gained two years experience and instead introduce new tests and training between the A2 and A licences.
Liz is a keen motorcyclist herself having passed her motorcycle test in 2002.
