EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT TO BECOME GREENER THANKS TO LIB DEM'S

March 20, 2007 12:00 AM

At a time where there is broad consensus and increasing awareness of the imminence of climate change and the need for swift action, West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne today expressed delight that the European Parliament's Working Group on internal reform agreed last week a proposal from the UK Liberal Democrats to reduce the European Parliament's own carbon footprint.

Speaking from Brussels today Liz commented;

"The European Parliament must practice what it preaches."

"We need to see real commitment across the House to take serious and practical steps to reduce our carbon footprint. This should look at all areas of activity from paper use, light bulbs, heating and means of travel to see where we can make energy savings."

"The UK Government has totally failed to reduce the carbon footprint of its own Government buildings ,but thanks to Lib Dem MEP's I now hope the European Parliament will take the lead. What we need urgently is more action and fewer words"

Notes to editors

A report last week from the Sustainable Development Commission showed how the UK Government is totally failing to reduce the carbon footprint of its own Government buildings.
