A Peaceful Resolution in Kashmir

Liz speaks at the opening of the Kashmir Centre in Brussels

As President of the Liberal Democrats Friends of Kashmir, as well as the Vice Chair for the EP All Party Kashmir Intergroup, Liz is particularly concerned about the conflict surrounding Kashmir.

Liz Lynne's statement on the Kashmir Report

The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Report on Kashmir: 'Present Situation and Future Prospects' is an Own Initiative Report. These type of Reports inevitably present a personal view on any given subject, over that of a Political Party as a whole.

This Report does not represent Liberal Democrat Party Policy as established by my motion to Federal Party Conference in September 2004.

I have tabled 61 amendments to the Report, along with my colleague Sajjad Karim MEP. We have both constantly stressed the need for all sides to work together to find a solution, and believe that these crucial amendments will ensure that the report will serve the interests of the Kashmiri people.

This is a fundamental human rights issue. Self determination is a broad concept, but is an absolute right, enshrined by the United Nations, and the European Union must respect and protect the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people.

A just and lasting solution can only be achieved in Kashmir by the Kashmiri people being placed at the forefront of the process. Whilst I welcome the involvement of both India and Pakistan in this process, it is the Kashmiri people's human rights that we must highlight and protect, and our amendments would ensure that this is reflected in the report.

I urge all of my colleagues from across all parties and from all member states to support these amendments, which can be accessed from the link below.
